The island council has passed a resolution calling on the government to support the efforts of fishermen from four southern atolls to establish a fish factory in G.Dh. Faresmaathodaa.

Faresmaathodaa Council has stated that 70 percent of fishing in the Maldives is carried out by southern fishermen. For this reason, the council expressed concern over lack of space eventhough Gaafu Alifu Atoll Kooddoo has a storage facility.

According to the council, the solution to the issue is to establish a fish factory in Faresmaathodaa, which is being executed by fishermen from four southern atolls.

"We call on the Maldivian government on behalf of faresmaathoda council to accept the efforts of fishermen from four southern atolls to establish a fish factory in Faresmaathodaa," said the resolution.

Fishermen are concerned that while there is a boom in fisheries industry it has not been possible for fishermen sell all of their fish. The government has stated that efforts are underway to resolve the issue.

The government has announced that soft loans worth MVR 59 million will be issued this year to install fish refrigeration systems on 118 vessels.
