Resorts no longer allowed to dump any waste into ocean

Tourism ministry of Maldives has amended the Regulation on the Protection and Conservation of Environment in the Tourism Industry to ban dumping specific types of waste into the ocean.

Regulation on Environmental Protection in the Tourism Sector published by the Tourism Ministry states that food waste and other perishables can be dumped into the sea if there is no dumping yard nearby.

The waste should not be dumped near the islands but outside the atolls in a way that they do not drift back to the shore by wind and currents.

The amendment published by the Tourism Ministry has removed the article which allows resorts to dump food waste in into the sea.

The amendment come into effect from Monday.

Violators will face a fine of MVR 1,000-10,000 for the first time. A fine will be imposed between MVR 100,000 and MVR 100,00 If it is repeated, it will be MVR 50,000-100,000.

The Ministry has the authority to revoke the resort operating permit if they violate the regulation repeatedly.
