Wage Board to set minimum wage on Wednesday

Wage Board announced on Sunday they will determine a minimum wage on Wednesday.

Member of Wage Board and Secretary General of Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) Mauroof Zaahir said that they will inform the Economic Ministry after they set a minimum wage.

According to the Employment Act, minimum wage can determined by the Economic Minister, on the recommendation of the Wage Board. The Wage Board is an independent body comprising of both employees and employers.

A set minimum wage will benefit those that are paid the least currently. The government aims to set a minimum wage between Rf. 6,700- Rf. 8,900.

It is unclear if the board will agree to the minimum wage set by the government.

The state has previously stated multiple dates by which they will set and announce the minimum wage. Dissatisfied with the current salaries civil servants are paid, civil servants wore black clothes when they went to work on Sunday in order to protest.
