Maldives Airports Company (MACL) decided Tuesday to stop offering the discount on dried skipjack and yellowfin tuna, and frozen fish products exported from the Maldives via MACL’s Cargo Services.

In a statement, MACL announced its decision to charge MVR 1 per kilogram of fish without weight break, same as other cargo. The change is to be implemented from August.

MACL had previously granted a discount of MVR 0.5 for every shipment of dried skipjack and yellowfin tuna, and frozen fish that surpasses 5000 kilograms.

Meanwhile, the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) had recently agreed to maintain the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certificate which authorises local fishermen to earn special rates on skipjack tuna.

The government has asserted its efforts to provide the best rates on skipjack tuna, the most commonly caught fish in the Maldives, for local fishermen.
