Maldives, one of the most vulnerable countries on earth to the effects of climate change, observed several climate strikes in the year 2019, across various atolls. If the larger, developed nations of the world do not comply to the terms laid out in the Paris Agreement, or rather if global emissions cannot be reduced and the planet reaches a temperature increase of over 2 degrees celsius (currently on the track to 3 degrees celsius, as per UN) then scientists unanimously agree, Small Island Nations like these may cease to exist. The worldwide effort to prevent Earth from becoming an unlivable hothouse is in the grips of "net zero" fever.

More than 110 countries have committed to becoming carbon neutral by mid-century, including major greenhouse gas emitters such as Britain, Japan and South Korea, according to the United Nations.
