Theft, accidents and drug-related offences dominate 2019: Statistics

Maldives Police Service's statistics revealed that offences of theft, drugs and traffic accidents ook the majority of logged crime within the year 2019.

According to the Statistical Pocketbook of Maldives published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the highest number of cases logged during 2019 theft, which recorded an increase of 39 percent compared to 2018.

In 2019, 4,551 cases of theft were reported, while 3,272 were reported in 2018.

Statistics further noted that 40 percent of the total 2,188 drug-related offences were reported for possession of narcotic substances.

Moreover, traffic accidents showed a marked increase with 2,323 accidents in 2019, while the previous year had only 2,007.

The Statistical Pocketbook also revealed that 396 cases of gender-based and domestic violence were logged in 2019.

Further concerns were raised since the beginning of the year, as public ire has grown considerably regarding the government's meagre record of arresting and convicting sexual offenders, despite numerous promises to protect the rights of children and women.
