Bank of Maldives (BML), announced the installation of solar streetlights in Kumundhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll under its 'Aharenge Bank Community Fund'.

According to BML, the project was undertaken to assist sustainable development projects in islands and was completed in January.

As part of the project, BML replaced already existing streetlights on certain roads as well as installed the solar lights on the new residential area of the island.

"We prioritize projects that are environmentally friendly. The project will reduce the load on Kumundhoo's electricity grid, lowering [electrical] expenditure", said BML's Manager of Public Relations Mohamed Saeed.

In order to reduce the load on the island's grid, the Kumundhoo Council noted the need to shut off various streetlights on the island.

"I hope the project will raise community awareness and trust in utilizing sustainable energy sources. Due to the project, the streets of the island will be a safe space, even during electricity shutdowns to reduce the electricity load", said project worker Amin Mohamed.

Amin added that the streetlights are expected to reduce approximately 20 percent of the island's electricity load.

'Aharenge Bank' Community Fund is a nationwide campaign to empower individuals to contribute to society by conducting sustainable community projects.

During each quarter of the fiscal year, BML selects and allocates MVR 50,000 to five projects in the areas of education, environment, sports and community development under the Aharenge Bank Community Fund. In 2019, BML contributed MVR 1 million to support projects in 20 islands across Maldives.
