Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim says that Maldives will initiate the demand for remedies to damages of climate change.
Speaking to the press before his departure late Friday for the Marrakech Climate Change Conference of this year held at Morocco, Minister Thoriq said that financial remedies would be demanded from bigger states for the damages they cause to the environment.
With regard to the aid given to date, the minister said, “I have full guarantee that we will be able to get the remedies”.
The meeting to be held at Morocco is the first meeting which the Maldives is taking part in after the ‘COP 21’ in Paris last year. This conference is to discuss the ways of implementing the ‘COP 21’ agreement.
It is noteworthy that the Maldives has been granted two more years to chair the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), hence Minister Thoriq said that a ministerial meeting of AOSIS will also be held in Morocco.
“We will try to convince our members to sign the agreement as some of them haven’t”, said Minister Thoriq.
The main reason for climate change is the toxic gases released to the atmosphere. During the Paris Agreement it was decided that all states would fulfill their obligation in maintaining the temperature rise below 2 degree Celsius.
