Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Sunday, requested all Maldivian currently in India and Malaysia to register at the respective Maldives' embassy as a precautionary measure amidst the coronavirus outbreak.

Both of the embassies, located in New Delhi, India, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia respectively, expressed the request via their official Twitter pages.

Despite official statements that no case of coronavirus have yet been diagnosed in India, authorities in India confirmed that 11 individuals suspected to be carrying the disease were under observation.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian government confirmed four cases of the coronavirus as of Saturday, all of whom are reportedly Chinese tourists.

The Maldivian Embassy in Japan has also requested all local citizens in the country to register themselves.

The novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) has resulted in a total of 56 deaths so far, while the latest reports place the number of reported cases above 2,000.

Although seven Maldivians are presently in Wuhan, China, the city in which the virus originated, the foreign ministry confirmed that none of them are infected and efforts to provide financial aid to these individuals are underway.

Chinese authorities quarantined the city of Wuhan on January 23, with travel bans now extended to twelve other cities, affecting more than 50 million people in China.

The virus, initially presenting with flu-like symptoms, has now been found in Australia, France, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam, with three confirmed cases from Japan as well.
