Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam has stated that he will be submitting to the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) his concerns about the delays in proceeding the appeal case for former President Abdulla Yameen, who is currently serving an 11 year prison sentence for money laundering and bribery.

In a campaign rally held in Addu, Aslam alleged that the government had deliberately obstructed the meeting of Yameen's People's National Front (PNF) and condemned such actions.

Aslam claimed that Yameen, too, must be afforded the respect and privileges that any former President of the country is entitled to, adding that it is unacceptable that Yameen remains without receiving justice.

Aslam, who is a member of the JSC as Speaker of Parliament, stated that the delays in holding Yameen's appeal case is evidence that the government is interfering in the judicial process regarding Yameen's case.

He asserted that he would personally submit and raise the issue of delays in Yameen's appeal case with the JSC.

"As I am a member of JSC through my capacity as Speaker of Parliament, I will submit the case [regarding Yameen's appeal] tomorrow, and ensure the matter is looked into," Aslam stated.

Hearings on Yameen's appeal case has been completed and is now awaiting a verdict. The case was submitted by Yameen.
