India's JMC Projects Limited wins the development project of Hanimaadhoo International Airport of Maldives.

JMC Projects is a prominent contracting firm already carrying multiple housing, water and sewerage projects across the Maldives.

Ministry of Economic Development on Wednesday, August 10, confirms awarding the project to JMC for a project value of USD136,625,386.44 (MVR2.1 billion).

The project is carried out through the line of credit issued by India's EXIM Bank.

Only contractors shortlisted by the bank are eligible to bid for the project.

The large-scale development of Hanimaadhoo airport will include development of a new 2.46 kilometers long runway, and a passenger terminal with the capacity of catering 1.3 million annual travelers.

Other major aspects of the project include development of infrastructure to transition the airport into a bigger international air gateway.

Upon completion, the airport will have the landing capacity for larger commercial aircraft including Airbus A320s as well as Boeing 737s.

The prime aim for this development is to enhance the airport as a direct gateway for inbound travels from South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Africa.

Moreover, the completion of this project will further enhance development of tourism in the northern parts of the country. Ministry of Tourism earlier identified a major challenge faced by northern atolls being the absence of direct flight routes between the atolls and foreign destinations.

Other economic benefits post the project completion include new business and employment opportunities, reports the ministry.

Air freighting services, with direct imports to northern atolls is another possible scenario post the project completion, adds the ministry.

Ministry of Economic Development confirms the project will commence sometime during late-2022, with expected completion in 2024.
