The United States has donated over 99,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Maldives.

At a ceremony held at the Ministry of Health, the US government donated 99,450 doses of Covid-19 vaccine to Maldives. These include Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

The US donated nearly 100,620 doses of the vaccine two months ago under COVAX facility.

Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) is a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to Covid vaccines directed by the GAVI vaccine alliance, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, and the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

US has donated the vaccine to administer booster doses to prevent new variants of Covid-19.

The country has donated USD 7 million in aid and 60 ventilators to Maldives in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. They had helped strengthen clinical care services and treatment systems for those in need.

Maldives has received a large number of Covid-19 vaccines and the number of Covid cases have now been brought under control. According to statistics by Health Protection Agency (HPA), Maldives recorded 106 Covid cases across the country last week. Only five of them have been hospitalized.

A large part of the Maldivian population has completed two doses of the vaccine. This accounts for 84 percent of the vaccinable population. Thirty-six percent of the eligible population have received booster shots.
