Health Protection Agency (HPA) shortens quarantine and isolation period for Covid positive people and direct contacts to 10 days if they have been fully vaccinated.

In a press conference held by the agency on Tuesday, Medical Officer Dr. Nazla Rafeeq said this decision was made after evaluating all the information they had received over the past two years about the virus and disease.

People that have not been fully vaccinated will still have to quarantine for 14 days. They will be released after doing a PCR test, and if they receive a negative result: Dr. Nazla

Previously, the quarantine period for people that had tested positive for Covid, as well as people that became exposed to it, was 14 days. However, quarantine period will be ten days from the day sample was taken, Dr. Nazla said.

Two options were available to people that are direct contacts of a Covid positive patient if they are fully vaccinated and show no symptoms; to complete a quarantine of ten days; or to quarantine for five days and do a PCR test.

If a person is showing no symptoms at the end of the ten days, further testing is not required, Dr. Nazla said. Testing is mandatory if they show symptoms though.

"People that have not been fully vaccinated will still have to quarantine for 14 days. They will be released after doing a PCR test, and if they receive a negative result," she said.

HPA held this press conference as Covid-19 cases are projected to increase within the next few weeks in Maldives. They urged everyone to vigilant in practicing hygiene and precautionary measures in order to overcome the Omicron surge.
