The government of Saudi Arabia sent 17 teachers to teach Arabic language in the Maldives and plans to establish an Arabic language centre in the archipelago.

The Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to the Maldives, Bader Ali Alkahail, awarded the commemorative agreement to the Minister of Education Dr Aishath Shiham during a special ceremony on Sunday.

Minister Shiham announced that the Saudi government decided to establish a centre to teach Arabic language in the Maldives during a Cabinet meeting towards the end of last December. The centre will provide free Arabic language courses. However, she did not provide further details on the venture.

Saudi Arabia also sent 17 teachers to teach Arabic language in the island nation. They were received by the Education Ministry and will serve in the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM), Maldives National University (MNU), Centre for the Holy Quran and the schools of capital Male and reclaimed suburb Hulhumale, as well as the Arabic medium schools in Addu City and Haa Dhaal atoll Kulhudhuffushi island.

A close ally of the Maldives, Saudi Arabia has recently increased its scholarships for Maldivian students to total 300. The kingdom had also donated 100,000 Arabic books to the island nation last year and, according to the Education Minister, will provide books and dictionaries on Arabic language for lower grades over the next month.
