Customs seize over 500g of drugs smuggled via post

Maldives Customs Service seized over 500g of drugs smuggled into the country via post.

In a press release issued on Thursday, Customs revealed that they caught 12 attempts to smuggle in drugs, packaged in parcels posted to Maldives from between June 28 and October 13 this year.

Six of the parcels were posted from Great Britain, five from the Netherlands and one from Ethiopia.

The seized drugs mostly comprised of ecstasy, cannabis and cocaine.

Weighing a total of 503g, Customs estimated their street value at over MVR 1.4 million.

The confiscated contraband have been handed over to Maldives Police Service for further investigation.

Authorities also recently seized around 200kg of drugs being smuggled into Maldives via sea. Multiple arrests have already been made in relation to these cases.

Under Maldivian law, drug trafficking is a serious criminal offence punishable by life imprisonment and carries a hefty fine in the range of MVR 100,000 (USD 6,485) to MVR 1 million (USD 64,850).
