Hammaadh's attacker remanded for 10 days

Rasdhoo Magistrate Court in Alif Alif Atoll remanded the man who allegedly attacked an individual on a fishing vessel, for a period of 10 days.

The perpetrator, who is believed to be a religious extremist, is accused of assaulting Ismail Hammaadh, aged 26, in a dispute that arose between a group of radicals. Hammaadh also belongs to the group and has a record of serious crimes.

According to Maldives Police Service, the suspect arrested over the assault is a male aged 30.

Hammaadh jumped off the vessel and swam onto Maalhos, Alif Alif Atoll, after he was attacked on Thursday night. Witnesses from the island stated that Hammaadh climbed onto Maalhos around 0300hrs in the early morning.

After being treated at Maalhos Health Centre for injuries, Police transferred Hammaadh to capital Male' on Friday morning with the help of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). Since then, he is under treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH)'s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

However, the hospital has yet to issue a statement about his current condition.

Hammaadh was reportedly stabbed various times with a sharp object and narrowly escaped death by jumping off the vessel and swimming to Maalhos.
