Mafaz, of Shaaraaz in Galolhu ward, has been accused of murder with a sharp object in the death of Nadeem Ibrahim, who was attacked in Terminal Cafe' by a group of assailants in July 2017.
Others accused of the crime are Ali Nifaz of Vidhaathari, Laamu Atoll Gan, Hussain Shamin of Samantha, Raa Atoll Innamaadhoo, and Mohamed Karam Suhail of Havaasaa, Gaafu Alif Gemanafushi.
Mafaz is charged with the actual attack on Nadheem, while the others were charged with being accomplices.
Criminal Court acquitted all charged with the crime last year, following which the State appealed the verdict at the High Court. The State further appealed to the High Court to place Mafaz in custody until the appeal case is concluded.
Today's High Court ruling said that there is sufficient evidence to accuse Mafaz of the crime. It read that releasing Mafaz from custody at this juncture may pose a danger to society. As a reason, the Court cited that Mafaz has been accused in multiple other cases, and has a history of being involved in various crimes.
The three Judges on the bench unanimously ruled to hold Mafaz in custody until the end of the trial.
The State had previously appealed to the Court to place the others accused in custody as well. However, at the time, High Court ruled that only Nifaz could be placed in custody. Nifaz remains in custody till date.
The High Court bench was compiled of Chief Judge Hussain Shaheed, Judge Hassan Mazeed and Judge Mohamed Saleem. Judge Mazeed presided over the hearing.
