President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that there is still work to be done to secure the rights of workers and the first step towards this is to ensure that they receive proper pay for their work.

In a statement issued on the occasion of International Workers' Day, the President said that issues such as delaying wages, not being paid enough for work, and employing people in low quality work environments remain within the community. He said that this was contrary to the standards and principles guaranteed by the Constitution and laws.

The President said that the government is working towards securing these rights to workers.

He stated that one important change brought by this administration is implementing a minimum wage system. He also noted that it is now mandatory to provide service charges to employees in the tourism sector within the legal framework.

“On the occassion of Labor Day we must remember that much remains to be done to ensure that workers rights are fully achieved, President said.

The President described workers as the "main engine" that drives forward a country's infrastructural and social development. He said that if more "energy" provided to the labour sector, the development and progress of the country would be greatly accelerated.

The President said that the most important "energy" needed in the Maldivian labour sector is the increase in participation of Maldivian youth of both genders.

"If so, we will easily see inception of development that we are trying to seek," said the President.
