The arrangement comes with a fixed rate of MVR 2.66 per kilogram or MVR 2,660 per tonne, as determined by the Ministry of Finance.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has decided to reassign the waste management services at Velana International Airport (VIA) to Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).
The arrangement comes with a fixed rate of MVR 2.66 per kilogram or MVR 2,660 per tonne, as determined by the Ministry of Finance.
This decision follows a directive from the Economic Council, managed under the President's Office, which issued updated regulations on waste management in Male'.
The Ministry of Finance subsequently ordered MACL to engage WAMCO for waste disposal, overriding a prior agreement with a private company. Earlier, MACL had awarded the contract to Sea Trading Pvt. Ltd at a cost of MVR 14 million per month.
MACL previously partnered with WAMCO for waste management services until October of last year. However, due to escalating costs, the arrangement was not renewed, and the contract was opened for bidding.
WAMCO trucks are not permitted to enter the airport due to security concerns. MACL had to manage the waste internally and transfer it to external collection points.
