Islamic Charity fund has donated 32 hospital beds to the Home for People with Special Needs in Kaafu Atoll Guraidhoo.

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham attended the special event held at the Islamic Ministry for the handover of the aid this morning.

Minister Shaheem said that the 32 beds are being donated on the initiative of Minister Shiham.

Shaheem requested the public to submit donations through the Islamic Ministry.

He said that these funds need to be spent on projects like assisting the needy in the Maldives, conducting Quran classes and competitions, on not-for-profit organizations, establishing libraries in islands, educational purposes and other beneficial purposes.

As per the ministry, MVR 500,000 was spent on the donation of these hospital beds.

The Special Needs centre in Guraidhoo is used for the treatment of persons with mental illnesses. However, there are a number of cases where the elderly have been placed at the centre as they have been placed under State care for various reasons.

While the centre has 190 patients staying there now, the Ministry is working on releasing those who have completed treatment back to the care of their families.

The ministry said that 19 patients are due to be released to their family's care soon.
