Telecom company Dhiraagu and local NGO Women in Tech Maldives on Sunday kicked off 'Girls to Code - Thinadhoo', a programme to teach coding for girls and young women.

The second iteration of the programme is being held in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, as a two-month virtual workshop for females between the ages of 14 and 20, aiming to increase interest and inclusion of women in coding and the technology sector.

The opening ceremony was held virtually on Sunday evening, with Dhiraagu, Women in Tech, and programme participants in attendance.

Women in Tech expressed gratitude for Thinadhoo residents' support and interest in the programme.

"We urge all participants to commit and complete this programme, and aim to learn the most important skill of the 21st century", said the NGO's President Niuma Faiz.

"We support this programme as women empowerment, in particular women inclusion in the field of technology, is a priority of our company's corporate social responsibility programme", added Dhiraagu's Director of Corporate Services Athifa Ali.

She further hailed the success of Dhiraagu and Women in Tech's previous collaborations, 'Girls to Code - Fuvahmulah' and 'Django Girls Male'', which were also held to encourage more women to join technology fields.

Girls to Code participants will learn to design and develop websites through HTML, CSS and JavaScript programming. Industry experts will also take part in the workshops, to disseminate information on project management and web development.

The first Girls to Code programme was held in Fuvahmulah in 2019, which was completed by 16 individuals. Dhiraagu and Women in Tech earlier disclosed that based on the results, there were plans to conduct workshops on coding and web development in more islands in the future.
