Presidential candidate of the opposition coalition PPM/PNC, Dr. Abdulla Muizzu, has included increasing allowances provided to single mothers in his presidential manifesto.
Dr. Muizzu, who is running for the presidential election scheduled on September 9, is also the current Mayor of Malé City.
The manifesto states that the allowance provided to single mothers will be increased by MVR 3,000 per child.
Currently, single mothers receive MVR 1,000 for each child. The legislation was modified in 2019 to raise the allowance by MVR 1,000 per child until it reaches a maximum of MVR 10,000. Single mothers will receive MVR 10,000 if they are responsible for ten minors.
If the allowance is increased according to Dr. Muizzu’s manifesto, a single mother with four children will receive MVR 12,000.
Dr. Muizzu's manifesto also includes a housing scheme for single mothers, featuring the provision of 1,000 two-room apartments specifically designed for their needs.
