The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Thursday postponed its Women's Development Committee (WDC) primary election to February 17.

MDP primaries were initially scheduled to be held on Friday. A total of 652 MDP candidates are contesting in the election.

Elections Commission (EC) decided to host the WDC elections in concurrence with the Local Council Elections (LCE) on April 4. This marks the first occasion for Maldives to hold two elections simultaneously.

EC Vice President Ahmed Akram revealed that applications for the LCE would close on February 20, while individuals contesting in the WDC elections had until February 24 to submit their candidacy.

A total of 980 councillors and 930 WDC members will be elected in the upcoming election. The 980 councillors will include 18 atoll council members, 179 island council presidents and 372 female councillors.

MDP concluded its local council primaries on January 31.
