Two men arrested for stealing from woman performing Tahajjud prayers

Two men have been arrested today in the capital Malé City for having stolen a phone and bag from a woman performing Tahajjud prayers in a mosque last night.

Two men have been arrested today in the capital Malé City for having stolen a phone and bag from a woman performing Tahajjud prayers in a mosque last night.

Spokesperson for the Maldives Police Service Ahmed Shifan said today that police had received a report of the incident at around 03:00 hrs early this morning. The robbery took place at Salaahuddin Mosque in Alikilegefaanu Magu, with two men having stolen the woman's phone and MVR 700 in her wallet while she was observing prayer.

Two men, both aged 36, have been arrested in relation to the report according to MPS.

It is common for robberies to increase during Ramadan every year. This time around, there has been a marked increase in the number of robberies being reported from mosques.

Earlier today, a fan was stolen from Viyafaariveringe' Mosque in Ameenee Magu, and as of yesterday, seven additional fans have been stolen from Taqwa Mosque over the course of three nights. A man has been arrested in relation to this case.

Two fans that had been affixed to the wall at Dharumavantha Mosque in Malé City were also stolen over the past week.

According to statistics by MPS, at least 110 cases of robbery have been reported in the Greater Malé Area alone over the first 15 days of Ramadan.
