Percentage of female candidates is 11 percent: Elections Commission

Elections Commission has said that the percentage of female candidates who have applied to contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections stand at eleven percent.

As the deadline for applications closed, Elections Commission received 381 applications for 93 constituencies.

In a post on social media X, Vice President of Elections Commission Ismail Habeeb revealed that the percentage of female candidates is at 10.76 percent of the total, amounting to 41 applicants.

Elections Commission is currently in the process of reviewing applications, after which those who do not meet requirements will be rejected. Rejected applicants will be notified through email, Habeeb said.

Applicants have also been provided with a timeframe within which they can withdraw their applications. At the end of this window, drawing lots for candidacy numbers will commence at 14:30 hrs today.

The highest number of female candidates from a single party comes from The Democrats, with 13 applicants. Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has 4 female candidates contesting in the upcoming elections, and ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) coalition presents two candidates. Jumhoori Party also has two female candidates running on its party tickets.
