President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described Maldivians as a people who have, over generations, always championed freedom and worked to protect the country from any and all external threats.

The President made these remarks while speaking in the special ceremony held in Dharubaaruge this morning to mark National Day.

He emphasized that the Maldives' ancestors have always defended the country in every way, mentioning the Maldivians success in regaining independence after thwarting the efforts of the Portuguese military to overtake the country in the past.

The President said that this dedication to protecting the country's independence is interwoven into all policies of this administration, adding that their refusal to allow foreign military presence in the country is testament to this.

He said that in carrying forward the historical will to protect the country, his administration is now making use of modern technology to continue protecting the country and monitoring its territory.

President Muizzu went on to state the importance of nurturing industrious generations to ensure loyalty and service to the country. He spoke of the importance of discipline and pledged to make efforts to re-instill the habits and discipline urged in Islam in the country.
