MIFCO's fish packing factory in Kaafu Atoll Kan'du Oiy Giri has been shut down, and the island has been handed over to Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam said in a press conference yesterday that the island has been handed over to MNDF on August 4.

He said that negotiations are being held with Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to allocate land from the Hulhumale' harbour for fishermen.

Kan'du Oiy Giri had housed a MIFCO facility dedicated to yellowfin tuna fisheries.

Shiyam said that the facility in Kan'du Oiy Giri had been established in order to find solutions for challenges faced by yellowfin tuna fisheries. Although the facility had operated long term, it had not presented sufficient solutions to the issues faced, he said.

This factory will now be relocated to Hulhumale'. However, Shiyam did not specify a date for the transfer.

Shiyam said that financial assistance had been received from abroad for the fish packing factory, which can now be utilized at the new setup in Hulhumale'.

One of the main reasons behind the relocation is troubles faced by fishing vessels in approaching and docking at the island.
