Most of the money stolen in the Western Union heist have been found, police said Monday.

A group of masked men armed with knives robbed the Western Union branch in the capital Male after tying up several employees late Sunday.

Police had said the robbers had tied up the employees at knife point around 1145 pm and cleaned out the local money transfer outlet.

"Though we've found a large part of the stolen money, Western Union is yet to give us the exact amount that was stolen," police spokesperson told Mihaaru.

Mihaaru has been unable to obtain an official comment from the money transfer outlet, but reliable sources say the robbers had been chased by some of the employees after the heist.

The robbers had reportedly dumped some of the money before getting away.
