After Maldives Democratic Party (MDP)'s internal rivalry and unrest during the presidential primary election, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed met for the first time last night.

The two met during a ceremony to mark India's 74th Republic Day held at Dharubaaruge yesterday.

Photos of the ceremony show President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Nasheed greeting each other. However during the meeting, they didn’t seem to talk much except for their initial greeting.

President Solih and Speaker Nasheed, as well as several ministers, members of parliament and leaders of several political parties had also attended the ceremony.

Nasheed and Economic Minister Fayyaz were seated at the same table at the ceremony marking India's republic day celebrations.

Fayyaz, who is a senior member of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's faction and the party's chairman, and Nasheed have differed on many issues, sometimes speaking out against one another.

President Solih and Nasheed, who had worked together very closely when the current government came to power, have now stopped working together politically.

MDP's internal elections including the chairperson election were won by candidates backed by President Solih.

President Solih had won the party's primary elections held last Saturday where he contested against Nasheed.

President Solih received 61 percent of the votes while Nasheed received 39 percent.

Nasheed accepted the results of the presidential primary but the Nasheed faction alleges that the election was heavily fraudulent.

Nasheed's direction is now to conduct a political movement in the name of "Fikuregge Dhirun" which translates to "reviving an ideology", within MDP and form separate branches. Nasheed also asked those who do not support the government to join the faction.
