Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) said on Friday evening that they would be taking appropriate action against former President Abdulla Yameen, who had "participated" in a protest while under house arrest.

Yameen, who was sentenced to a five year jail sentence in 2019, was moved from Maafushi jail to his home in April of this year when COVID-19 cases surged.

He has participated in the protest held by the opposition coalition when supporters gathered outside his residence. Members and supporters of Progressive Parties of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress supporters gathered ex president's house when police prevented them from marching.

Yameen had shown himself support to the participants by waving at them outside his window, in addition to waving both the national flag of Maldives and the flag of the flag of PPM.

Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamedfulhu said Yameen's actions were in violation of the terms of his release into house arrest. He said this matter would therefore be investigated and appropriate action would be taken.

It is unclear what kind of action would be taken against Yameen though.

Yameen received his jail sentence when it was proven in court that he was a beneficiary of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations (MMPRC) Corruption. It was proven he had accepted a bribe of USD 1 million over the leasing of Gaafu Alifu Vodamulla and further laundered that money.
