Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) on Tuesday issued a yellow alert to Central Atolls due to the extreme South-Western monsoon weather conditions affecting Maldives.
The yellow alert was issued in relation to scattered rain, heavy showers, thunderstorms and strong winds forecasted by MET to regions starting from Baa Atoll to Vaavu Atoll.
Heavy showers and surface winds varying at a speed of 13- 23 miles per hour, with gusts reaching 45- 50 miles per hour are expected according to the yellow alert issued from 0845 hours to noon.
Prior to issuing the yellow alert for Central Atolls, MET had issued a white alert for the entirety of Maldives earlier Tuesday.
MET predicted heavy showers from Haa Alif Atoll to Thaa Atoll, thereby issuing a yellow alert to the region between 0740- 0140 hours. Further, heavy rain and gusts reaching 50 miles per hour were predicted in the area.
Due to the current extreme weather, several islands are facing severe flooding, such as the case in Nafiaru, Lhaviyani Atoll, where certain houses were flooded causing damages to property.
According to local media Mihaaru, President of Naifaru Council Mohamed Karim declared that the island faced non-stop rain for approximately two hours. He relayed that the floods entered four houses causing damages to several furniture.
He further stated that Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Maldives Police Service, the island council and the company contracted to install sewerage system in Naifaru are collaboratively working to drain the water from flooded areas.
