President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has promised to honor his pledge made during the presidential campaign for local fishers, assuring that the price per kilo for fish will not be reduced below MVR 20.

At the "Masveringe Gunzaru" held in commemoration of Fishers Day, local fishers presented their concerns to the President. One primary request by the fishers was not to reduce the price of fish below MVR 20 per kilogram.

Currently, tuna and other oceanic fish caught by local fishers are sold at MVR 25 per kilo, which was increased from MVR 17 per kilo, a price that had been maintained for an extensive period.

The previous government led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih decided to increase price of fish due to significant complaints from local fishers.

During the meeting, local fishers requested expediting the development of fish weighing facilities at Meemu Atoll Mulaku and at the south of Huvadhoo Atoll. The fishers suggested increasing fish weighing facilities in key locations across the country to help fishers weigh their catch easily.

President Muizzu assured to provide robust solutions to the concerns addressed by the fishers and further promised to tackle more pressing matters immediately.

At the meeting, President Muizzu further assured that his pledges during the campaign were not empty promises, but they were made with the hope to fulfill them. He noted that the meeting with local fishers has provided insight into how to better tackle the prevailing issues.

A total of 40 local fishers took part in the meeting on December 10, 2023.
