President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has taken his oath of office.

This monumental moment was marked by a 21 gun salute, followed by a brass band performance of the National Anthem.

President Muizzu has signed the Instrument of Oath confirming the transition of power.

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has also taken his oath of office. The oath was administered by Chief Justice of Maldives Ahmed Muhthasim Adnan, with the Parliament Speaker and President Muizzu present.

He stated that the Maldives will be built for two specific purposes in the new administration, giving priority to two fundamental values. These are structural development and human development.

He said that as he assumes presidency, the country is in an unprecedented amount of debt. He assured that his administration is ready to face this.

The President said that news ways of reducing spending will be innovated. The strongest factor of the Maldives' economy is tourism, which benefits the people at personal, familial and national levels. This is why his administration will focus especially on the industry.

President Muizzu emphasized that land ownership and home ownership are pressing matters that pose a variety of challenges to the people. He pledged that this new administration would become 'the golden era of housing'.

The President said that a masterplan will be compiled for the next 20 years centering on the people's propositions, and the new administration will work to achieve legal standing for this.

He praised scholars, and said they will be consulted as a priority when implementing policies in any field.

He assured that this administration will work to further strengthen love for the religion, and that it will provide space for scholars to express themselves verbally and through writing.

He asserted that he is a Maldivian first, and will always prioritize Maldives, while ensuring the nation maintains strong ties with other countries.

President Muizzu reiterated that he will be just towards all and that he would not go against his word.

The President also asserted that his administration will say a resounding no to all acts of corruption.

The special parliament sitting has commenced. 81 parliamentarians are in attendance. Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam is presiding over the sitting.

Dr Muizzu will be the 8th President of the Maldives in its 55 years of being a Republic.

1st President Ibrahim Nasir served for 10 years, 2nd President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom served for 30 years.

While the 3rd President Mohamed Nasheed served 3 years, President Dr Mohamed Waheed served for one and a half years.

President Abdulla Yameen served for a five year term, with the current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also having served for one five year term.

The inauguration is expected to have approximately 3000 attendees.

The stage is a replica of the set up at the Parliament of Maldives.

The construction of the venue was undertaken by MNDF's SIWEC.

This is the first time a Presidential Inauguration is being held at the Republic Square.

The Inauguration of the 8th President of the Maldives Dr Mohamed Muizzu is scheduled to start in a few minutes. Attendees are now arriving at the Republic Square.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, First Lady Fazna Ahmed, Vice President Faisal Naeem, and his wife Aishath Samsadha have arrived at the Republic Square.

Former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Dr Mohamed Waheed are also expected to attend.

Delegates from 46 countries will be attending the ceremony.

After the inauguration, there will be a ceremony at 7.45 pm at the President's Office where the new cabinet will be sworn in.
