WAMCO has stated that its official hours for waste collection for the month of Ramadan in Male’, Hulhumale’ and Villingili areas were between 8:00 pm to 12:00 pm.

However, by the first of Ramadan 2018 (as it is recognized by the Maldives), many homes in Male’ and Hulhumale’ have reported that WAMCO had not collected their trash.
Owed perhaps in part to the nation’s festivities in marking the first of the holy month, large quantities of rubbish were found disposed of on the streets, filling and blocking the corners of certain roads and alleyways. Much of the litter was identified as food and other perishables, copious amounts of which were seen spilled out onto the streets and emitting foul odors.
According to sources from WAMCO, waste was collected last night from a number of homes. Yet, when questioned about the uncollected bags of rubbish left out on the streets, the company requested that the query be put through via a letter during official hours.
While many continue to criticize how the holy month commenced with an increase in litter on the streets, others are expressing concern regarding the allocated hours of service and a resultant low probability of collecting such large amounts of waste within a respectively short period of time.
