Most of Zakat Fund aid allocated towards cancer treatment

Statistics released by the Maldives Zakat House reveal highest amount of aid from the Zakat Fund last month was issued for cancer treatment. The fund was also utilized for the arrangement of scholarships and support for travelers in aid.

Statistics reveal that the newly established institution by this administration to oversee matters related to Zakat, "Maldives Zakat House," disbursed the highest amount of aid from the Zakat Fund last month for cancer treatment.

Maldives Zakat House commenced releasing their monthly statistics from March. The institution disclosed their statistics for the month of March yesterday.

Last month's statistics revealed that a total of MVR 878,682.88 was utilized for managing healthcare treatments for the poor and underprivileged. This includes the expenses for the healthcare of 59 individuals.

Details of the healthcare aid

• 28 percent expended on treatment of cancer

• 26 percent expended on brain surgeries

• 4 percent expended on liver transplants

• 1 percent expended on heart operations

The remaining 41 percent was utilized for other healthcare treatments.

Zakat House stated that the aid arranged for individuals in February is also included in the expenditure for last month.

The institution had further utilized MVR 17,207.65 in March for those in need due to special circumstances and had also spent MVR 248,604 on Ibn Sabeel or travelers who require aid to complete their journey.

Moreover, scholarships and stipends for administrative staff were also included under other expenditures for March. While MVR 44,563.80 was utilized to arrange scholarships, the Zakat Fund had also expended MVR 374,950.28 on the remuneration of employees.

Ministry of Islamic Affairs had also reached a decision to issue USD 100,000 from the fund to assist those in need at Palestine, Gaza earlier this month.
