Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) candidate, Malé City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to reduce waste disposal rates by Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO).

Dr. Muizzu made the remarks after opening a hub of PPM in Maafannu district on Wednesday, September 6. According to him, the current waste disposal rates were an inconvenience for the customers.

Dr. Muizzu said that, in addition to being a financial burden on the public, the current rates for small to medium-sized (SME) businesses were unreasonably high.

"So, I would like to assure you, and ask you to trust me, that if Malé residents vote to elect me in the presidential election, we would reduce the current unreasonable WAMCO rates," Dr. Muizzu said.

The mayor also said that the rate hikes for WAMCO were not motivated to make the company profitable, which he said was already financially stable, but rather because of mismanagement.

He claimed that WAMCO can operate profitably with lower disposal rates by restructuring the company with an honest management.

The waste disposal fees were revised last July, with the rates hiked between MVR 250 and MVR 950. Since July, waste disposal charges were added to State Electric Company's (STELCO) electricity bills.

Following the company's decision to hike the rates, several businesses and the Malé City Council had expressed their concerns.
