Over 900 tons of waste disposed and cleared from Kaafu atoll Maafushi waste site.

Maafushi council's president Hassan Salaah confirms the site had not disposed or cleared waste for a period of six years.

The waste disposal site situated near Maafushi jail had been a reclaimed area; mostly from garbage disposed into the sea bed.

Meanwhile, Salaah confirms the council will be contracting State Electric Company (STELCO) for waste management of the island in prospective future. The council initiated the massive clean-up before the handover.

Post clean-up of the waste disposal site, the council encourages island's public to segregate biodegradable waste from non-biodegradable.

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) initiated the clean-up along with Ministry of Environment.

The cleared waste will be transported to the industrial and waste disposal island of Thilafushi; where it will be permanently destroyed.

The entire clean-up project reportedly cost MVR3.5 million.
