Ministry of Environment, on Tuesday, contracted two companies to establish incinerators on three islands.

During the ceremony held at the ministry, Macstar Maldives Pvt Ltd was awarded the project of installing incinerators in Kulhudhuffushi, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, and in Fuvahmulah.

The incinerator at Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll, will be established by Coral Life Maldives.

Environment Minister Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan signed both agreements on behalf of the state, while Managing Director Mohamed Ibrahim represented Macstar Maldives and Managing Director Umar Ameer signed for Coral Life Maldives.

The incinerators installed under this project can burn four tonnes of waste per day. The incinerators will be dismantled and transported to the islands from Thilafushi, the landfill island in Kaafu Atoll.

While Macstar was granted four months to complete the project on both islands, Coral Life was given a deadline of one and a half months.

The project cost for Fuvahmulah and Kulhudhuffushi totals MVR 4.5 million. The state will spend MVR 1.9 million for the incinerator installed at Maafushi.

Highlighting that Maafushi is one of the leading islands in local tourism, Minister Hassan Rasheed Hussain stated that the biggest problem facing the island is poor waste management.

Speaking at the ceremony, the minister also highlighted that the waste management issue is worsening across the archipelago, adding that the ministry was working towards finding permanent solutions for this problem.
