The police on Thursday morning obstructed and stopped the peaceful walk held in celebration of International Woman’s Day by the opposition coalition in capital Male.

The walk, which was initiated by the leading women in the opposition coalition, was to start off at 7:00 a.m. near Jumhoory Party’s main hub. However, the police put up barricades and closed off the area. The participants of the walk remained nearby and continued to demonstrate. The gathering remained peaceful even after the police intervened.

The women who took part in the gathering claimed that they are facing great challenges in the process of building the nation. The mayor of Male, Shifa Mohamed, declared that the current government creates many difficulties for women. She claimed that many women have been sacked from jobs, making their lives hard.

She also praised the courage and bravery of the wives of the late Dr. Afrasheem Ali and Abdulla Rasheed,. The former was a lawmaker that was brutally murdered, while Abdulla was a May Day protester who died in jail while serving his sentence.

Although the police stopped the walk, the participants remained in the area until 8:00 a.m.
