The President's Office, on Tuesday, revealed that the government received 3,068 complaints concerning the four temporary lists of recipients for flats under the 'Hiyaa Public Housing Project', which was publicized by the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.

The complaint submission deadline for the temporary lists issued regarding the housing categories for doctors and nurses (H4), teachers (H5), residents of Male' (H8) and persons with disabilities and their families (H10), expired on Monday.

Lists were published on the national gazette after the Presidential Committee Investigating Public Housing Schemes re-evaluated points allocated to applicants during the previous administration.

According to the President's Office, the majority of complaints pertained to the allocation of points, 140 submissions concerned points allocated to other recipients and 57 complaints asserted that individuals were placed on the list despite failing to meet requirements.

A further 85 complaints were lodged regarding information provided as additional comments, 78 complaints highlighted factual errors and 278 complaints were submitted concerning other issues.

Noting that the Presidential Committee Investigating Public Housing Schemes had commenced efforts to review and respond to the complaints, the President's Office assured that the finalised lists for the four categories would be compiled with consideration to the complaints.

Compared to the previous allocations of the 7,000 social housing units contracted by jailed former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the incumbent administration will distribute 233 apartments to doctors and nurses, as opposed to the 475 previously allotted.

Further revisions include the 523 flats to doctors compared to the 625 allotted before, and 1,772 flats to Male' residents in contrast with the 1,000 allotted previously.

Initiated during the government of former President Yameen, the Hiyaa Project comprises the development of 7,000 flats, in the form of 16 towers of 25-storeys each, in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale's second phase.

Although the previous PPM administration had issued a list of recipients, allegations of corruption and unjust distribution prompted the current government to form a committee to probe the issue, further delaying the handover.

Over 25,000 people were reported to have initially applied to purchase flats from the Hiyaa project.
