President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday, appointed local media channel VTV's journalist Aminath Ameena (Ana) to the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom).

Ameena was presented with her letter of appointment by President Solih at a special ceremony held in the President’s Office.

Ameena, who serves as an editor and prime time news anchor at VTV, earned her undergraduate degree in Journalism from Maldives National University (MNU). She completed her Master's Degree in Journalism and Media Communications at the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM).

Across her over 13-year career in journalism, Ameena was a recipient of the Maldives Media Council (MMC)'s journalism award on two occasions.

In 2016, she was granted the award for best video journalist and in 2018 she received best video journalist award in the social category.

The parliament approved of her appointment on June 9. All 63 parliamentarians attending the session voted in favour of the decision.

The list presented to the Parliament by President Solih contained the names of Ameena, Sangu TV's presenter Shifla Ibrahim and Raajje TV journalist Mohamed Fazeen.

With this development, the seven-member commission now has four members and three vacant positions, including it's President, former TV presenter Mariyam Waheeda, Vice President Ahmed Gais, former journalist Ali Yoosuf and Ameena.

Former Broadcom members Ismail Sofwan and Hassan Nabaah resigned last year when the Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions moved to dismiss them, following a probe into questionable activities by the commission. The Parliament also voted to sack the commission's then-vice president Fathimath Zaina.
