According to Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO), two months after households were forced to segregate their waste, many households in Male' city area are still disposing of their garbage without separating.

Senior Public Relations Officer Ahmed Azim told Miharu that the company collects data by categorizing households into three colours. Which are;

- Green: households that separate waste best.

- Yellow: Households that separate waste to some extent.

- Red: Households that do not separate waste at all.

According to the statistics of the last two months, only 20 percent of households in the city fall into the green category. The remaining 80 percent of households are still not separating their waste, said Azim.

"But we think that 20 percent is a good result. As people become more aware of this, we think that percentage can be increased," he said.

WAMCO and the Environment Ministry are preparing to launch a special campaign to address the difficulties faced by some households in separating waste.

The city has been segragating and disposing of garbage since last June. Before that, households in the city used to throw away organic waste, plastic and other types of garbage in one bag.
