Chief Superintendent of Police, Ahmed Shifan has stated that crime rate in Maldives has begun decreasing with May 2023 statistics indicating a particularly significant decrease in theft compared to December last year.
Police announced today that statistics from the first five months of the past year indicate a gradual decline in the crime rate in the Maldives.
Chief Superintendent of Police, Ahmed Shifan, stated on social media platform X that reports of crimes reported to the police since December last year have been gradually decreasing.
According to statistics released by the police today, cases of theft has observed a significant decline from December 2023 to May 16.

- Theft: 777 cases reported in December last year while 356 cases were reported in the month of May until the 16th.
- Assault: 155 cases reported in December last year while 62 cases were reported in the month of May until the 16th.
- Robbery: 117 cases reported in December last year while 38 cases were reported in the month of May until the 16th.
- Drugs: 373 cases reported in December last year while 177 cases were reported in the month of May until the 16th.
- Kidnapping: 5 cases reported in December last year while 1 case was reported in the month of May until the 16th.
These number indicate that crime rate has significantly decreased compared with the same period last year.
In the first quarter of 2023 (January, February, March), a total of 2,520 cases were investigated, with 964 cases related to theft and mugging. Additionally, there were 268 cases related to drugs and 149 cases related to intimidation.
Shifan stated that the police will make their best efforts to maintain this trajectory and ensure these crime rates remain low.
