Transparency Maldives (TM) expressed concerns over President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom seeking to nullify the presidential elections held on September 23, this year.
According to a press statement released on Sunday TM, having conducted a nation-wide domestic election observation of the 2018 presidential election, noted that their pre-election assessments indicated that the electoral environment had been systematically set-up to favour of the incumbent, adding that issues observed on election day were not serious enough to impact the outcome of the election.
The anti-corruption watchdog said, “We call on all parties to uphold the will of the people and facilitate a peaceful transfer of power.”
The apex court on Wednesday accepted the case presented by Yameen against the elections, in which the incumbent president had lost by a significant margin.
The proceedings, which commenced Sunday afternoon, is presided over by the Supreme Court’s full bench of five judges, including Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi.
After the President conceded his defeat in a public address to the people, the representing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had filed a case to nullify the electoral result claiming it had received numerous complaints from President Yameen’s supporters.
In recent weeks, PPM ramped up its campaign against the ballot results, by casting doubt over the functional independence of EC, and its integrity.
While the party has filed a case to nullify the results of the presidential election, many global institutions and foreign dignitaries have endorsed the election and offered their congratulations to the opposition coalition victor President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The incumbent government has also assured these same parties, that the transition of government is set to take place in a peaceful manner.
