The expatriate detained under charges of killing street cats and preparing food items from their meat has been handed over to Maldives Immigration.

The man in question, Arafat Hossain, 32, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested while in hiding after a notice to appear before the agency was issued in response to videos accusing him of killing cats and using their meat to prepare food emerged on social media.

He was detained while attempting to alter his appearance at a local salon, Ahaana Hair Style in Maafannu ward of capital Male' City.

The man, found to have been residing illegally in the Maldives has now been handed over to Immigration custody, said Police, adding that criminal investigations are ongoing into the allegations.

Videos on social media show a local questioning Arfath at a location with a large stray cat population; the parking zone in front of Marry Brown, near Boduthakurufaanu Magu, prior to his detainment. In the video, when questioned why he is in the parking lot with plastic bags, he said that he uses them to take cats home.

The individual who published the video also showed clips from outside Arfath's residence, and said neighbors have reported hearing cats' cries and seeing body parts of cats in the vicinity.
