Indian government agrees to sell 520 tonnes of sugar to Maldives under special permit.
The decision to sell sugar to Maldives was made as per the agreement signed between two countries. Indian government said on Tuesday that they plan to sell 520 tonnes of sugar to State Trading Organisation (STO) of Maldives within 90 days as per the signed agreement.
The permit issued by the Indian government to STO for export of sugar, Maldives will receive the agreed amount of sugar without any difficulties until 2024.
The Indian government banned the export of certain products without special permits in May due to inflation in the country. This includes sugar as well.
Last month, even though the country banned the export of wheat, Maldives' Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid said that it will still be imported to Maldives under special permit.
However, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry said that the items will be imported to the Maldives with a special permit and that there will be no shortage of staple food. He had reassured that Maldives will not have shortages on staple food.
