Virgin Atlantic launches Male'-London direct flights

Virgin Atlantic launched direct flights between London Heathrow and Velana International Airport (VIA) on Monday, October 23.

The inaugural flight touched down at VIA on Monday morning at 07:40 a.m.

MACL organized a traditional Maldivian Boduberu item, along with other cultural performances to celebrate the event.

Virgin Atlantic will be operating direct flights between Male' and London three times a week. The airline will operate the Boeing 787 Dreamliner consisting of 31 upper class, 35 premium, and 192 economy delight, classic, and light seats.

Speaking about the Virgin Atlantic's direct flights between the UK and Maldives, CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Mahjoob Shujau said, "As the operator of Velana International Airport, we are excited to welcome the prestigious and customer-centric airline, Virgin Atlantic."

Juha Jarvinen, the Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Atlantic noted the airline's excitement to launch flights between the two countries, and expressed delight in offering more opportunities to the airline's customers.

"The collaboration between MACL and Virgin Atlantic reflects the shared commitment to delivering exceptional travel experiences and fostering stronger air connectivity between the United Kingdom and the Maldives," said Juha.

The British High Commissioner to the Maldives Caron Rohsler also expressed her delight of the airline's direct flight launch to the Maldives.

"Maldives is a top holiday destination for British tourists. Brits have consistently featured among top 3 nationalities visiting Maldives for many years," Caron said.

"The UK Government has worked with the Government of Maldives for many years now on airport safety and aviation security. I look forward to continuing out partnerships in Maldives, especially as the airport expansion progresses."

Founded in 1984 by Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Atlantic currently employs more than 7,500 people globally while flying its customers to 31 destinations across four continents.
