The Democrats, led by former President Mohamed Nasheed, has stated that the delay in serving justice in the case of the attack on Nasheed three years on is a disgraceful situation that demonstrates the status of the country.

This May 6 marks three years to the day Nasheed was attacked by an IED explosion while walking to his car parked on Majeedhee Magu from his private residence Kenereege, accompanied by his bodyguards.

The Democrats expressed deep concerns that even to date, justice had not been served in this case.

The party expressed concerns about the trials of the accused perpetrators other than those who confessed getting delayed, release of some suspects who were earlier in custody, and acquittal of others.

The Democrats said that the failure to identify any individuals behind the attack even till now, and justice failing to be served, demonstrates the status of the country and is utterly disgraceful.

"The Democrats believe this is an act of considering large issues as minor infractions, undermining the seriousness of such crimes, and normalizing them," the party's statement reads.

The Democrats called on concerned authorities to expedite efforts to conduct a full investigation into the matter to its depths, to identify and take action against all individuals involved, and to serve justice.

The attack, which was carried out when Nasheed was serving as Speaker of Parliament, caused serious injuries, leading to Nasheed having to undergo immediate major surgeries. Months were spent in recovery from the multiple serious injuries he sustained in the attack.

The State charged Mujaz Ahmed of Mahchangolhi Feyruge, Male', Thahmeen Ahmed of Folheymaa, Gaafu Alif Kon'dey, Ali Haisham of Nooreege, Noonu Manadhoo, Fahmy Ali of Hudhuruvaage, Gaafu Alif Villin'gili, Ishaq of Maafannu Kudhehige, Male' and Mohamed Nazim of Asareege, Alif Alif Maalhos.
