Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim said that throughout his tenure in various state positions responsible for handling government funds, he has never misused state funds for illicit personal enrichment.
Qasim attended a forum held for Maldivian civil societies, associations, and sports clubs on Tuesday evening, August 15, during which he highlighted the graft scandals of previous administrations.
Qasim, a former minister of finance, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) governor, and Maldivian governor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, said that despite his positions involving the management of state funds, he had never abused them.
"I have not taken even half a cent from the state's funds," said Qasim.
During the forum, Qasim expressed his intention to impart knowledge and assistance to the Maldivian public to enhance their livelihood. He said that his decision to run for presidency was driven by a meaningful purpose.
"So, I ask all of you, why not give me a chance to prove myself as your president? Why shouldn't you provide me with the opportunity to see if my words hold true?" Qasim questioned.
"I had helped the current president, as well as former MDP president Mohamed Nasheed, and PPM president [Abdulla Yameen] to win their presidencies," Qasim said.
At the forum, Qasim announced his plans for civil societies, associations, and sports clubs, and explained JP's vision to improve these organizations.
- Insurance for athletes in national sports associations
- Land ownership for associations to ensure housing
- Establishment of the “Civil Society Building” and ensure rights of volunteers/humanitarians
- Amend sports law and provide financial support
- Home and Away model for sports
- Increase remuneration of national athletes and officials
- Financial support/funding for innovative projects
Qasim had addressed the questions from participants of the forum and assured them that their suggestions would be incorporated into JP's manifesto.
