Male' City Council has decided to shift the fiber workshops in the east-end side of Vilimale' to a different location.

Earlier, the council had shifted the boat yard at the island's southwest end to its east-end to facilitate for the development of the Thilamale' Bridge project which will reportedly run through the southwest end of the suburban island.

The decision was met with public outrage and a subsequent strike.

Council's recent decision of shifting fiber workshops from the east-end comes amid the ongoing public outcry.

Meanwhile, the pro-environment association "Save the Beach Maldives" had initiated a series of rallies voicing their distaste against council's earlier decision of shifting the boatyard to the east end.

The association had recognized the huge environmental impact this action carried, which resulted in significant damage to the surrounding environment including loss of plant life.

In its general meeting, City Council has decided to enact a temporary fiber-boatyard elsewhere in Vilimale'.

The council authority specified that the temporary boatyard will be erected near the island's WAMCO site as per the request from Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.

City Council had also reported that it has requested from the ministry to provide a different plot to develop a fiber boat yard, reasoning that such works are unsafe within suburban environments.

The public outcry towards council's decision of shifting the boatyard to the east-end ignited mainly due to the area being used by thousands of beachgoers on a regular basis.
